TIPS TO TURN YOUR KITCHEN WASTES INTO MANURE

It is the responsibility of every household to reduce the amount of garbage it generates. Kitchen wastes like vegetables and fruit peels are degradable and need not end up in garbage bins. They can be turned into compost. The composting process is not rocket science either. Here is the simple technique. Try it....

  • Do not mix waste the different kinds of wastes generated at home. Store them separately as compostable and recyclable.
  • You may compost perishable wastes in a flowerpot that is around one foot deep by spreading the wastes and sprinkling garden soil. The waste need not be covered fully with soil.Composting starts immediately. It does not stink and also not stink and also does not attract flies.
  • To prevent nuisance from birds and pests cover the pot with a wire mesh.
  • The pot will take almost 30 days to fill in a household of five members.
  • As soon as the pot is full ,cover it with 1/4" garden soil and keep it aside. Take another pot and continue the practise. By the time the second pot is full , the waste in the first pot would have turned into rich manure.
  • Sprinkle water every two to three days to prevent drying. Avoid excess watering as it will halt the composting process and lead to routing.
